The Layover and How to Overcome It

The Layover and How to Overcome It

September 07, 2017

If you’re anything like us, you probably hate layovers so bad you wouldn’t mind sleeping all the way through them.

Most people prefer booking or taking direct flights to their destination over ones with a layover. With the beautiful beaches, ruins, mountains or loved ones waiting for you, why would one not?

However, there may be times when you find yourself obliged to have a layover because your flight got delayed or you simply had to choose the cheaper alternative. And the issue is always the same: what do you do with all those hours in between flights? Don’t go counting sheep yet, here are nine things you can do to save you from absolute boredom.

  1. Sleep

Ok so maybe you should start counting sheep. For those of you who are completely exhausted from the long journey, catch some Zs while you’re waiting for your flight.

  2. Get a room

For those who do not like sleeping in airport terminals, many airports have designated sleeping sections, or if you’re still not comfortable with that, you could simply get a room at a motel nearby. Just remember to wake up in time for your flight!

  3. Play an instrument

If you got the skills and the instrument, go ahead and save yourself – and those around you – from boredom. Go on, have your very own concert at the airport. Who knows, you just might become the next Ed Sheeran.

  4. Play Games

No, we don’t mean on your phone. Pack a board game or two and have some fun with your travel companion or get to know someone through playing a game with them, expand your network.

  5. Talk with a stranger

Of course if you didn’t pack any games, instrument, or aren’t in the least bit drowsy, improve your social skills! Get to know someone new or strike up a conversation with that cute person sitting a row from you, who knows what might come out of it. (Cue the hearts)

  6. Eat!

Well, airplane food isn’t exactly a five star meal. So go ahead and eat while waiting for your flight. There are loads of cafes or food stalls at the airport. Save your taste buds ahead of time.

  7. Work out

Burn those calories stored from sitting long hours and do some stretches to get your blood flowing. Some airports even have yoga and fitness areas if you prefer not having an audience.

  8. Go shopping

If you forgot to pack something or didn’t buy that perfume our friend has asked you to bring along, this is the perfect time to shop. However, if the airport prices are too expensive for you and you have sufficient time, you can go out to the nearest mall get your shopping done. You can also check out what our receivers are requesting on the AirWayBill app, and if any of the posts match the destination you’re going to, grab or buy the item during your shopping spree.

  9. Sight see

If you have too much time on your hands, and the country or city you’re in doesn’t require a visa for you to go out and explore, then go ahead and explore the town you’re in! You might find some amazing gift ideas (this can be linked to another blog we have about amazing gift ideas around the world) or rare products available to that specific place alone. Expand your horizons!

Remember to make the most out of everything. Something as bothersome as a layover doesn’t have to be worse than it is, turn it into something fun and memorable. You might even love it and decide to keep getting layovers in the future!
